This week my assignment is to find an image that shows stratification, but in a subtle way. Then I had to answer the following questions.
What type of stratification is being demonstrated in your image?
My image shows a woman and her at the top of their stairs but there is a gap so she cannot go through the door, meanwhile the man has the door right ahead with no gap. The type of stratification shown is in gender and the opportunities they have based on that.
How do we know this type of stratification is being shown?
Because it is directly implied with the missing steps in the staircase with the female. She goes through more obstacles in order to reach her goals. Meanwhile the male is given an easier path.
Is your image representative of life in the United States? How does this compare to other parts of the world?
This image is a representation of the United States. In other parts of the world, it is also common for males to make more money than females. However, there are places where females make more money than males, but only when they do not have children. That was something interesting to learn, children impact wages, I wonder why.
Does the stratification that is being shown need to be corrected or is it generally accepted? If needed, how would you fix it?
If a male and female can both do the same job, under the same circumstances, I fail to see why one should make more than the other. I wish we could make it equal I think that would be good, but unfortunately, that is a hard reality to achieve. I would say this is not generally accepted because this is a topic that angers many people, but little to nothing has been and can be done.
